Julie Manet and her greyhound Laertes by Berthe Morisot

Over the years, little Julie – the heroine of many pictures of her mother – has turned into an attractive girl. When many relatives of the artist left forever, the daughter became her only joy and close friend.

In the work on the painting “Julie Manet and her greyhound Laertes” Berthe Morisot manages to convey the daughter’s natural posture. Julie is sitting on the sofa, the upholstery of which in colors is close to the coat color of the dog – a gift to Mallarme. The paint is applied so thinly that in several places you can see the primer.

Due to this, the objects become almost transparent, moreover, it seems that they are rising in the air, like a light blue armchair located next to Julie. Through the entire composition, it seems, there passes a subtle vibration resulting from the constant and very dynamic movement of the brush.
