Hermitage in the Shepherds by Karl Bryullov

In the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where Bryullov studied for 12 years, classicism was an alpha and an omega; he was equalized, he was planted. But the orthodox classicist Bryullov did not: the only picture that fits perfectly into the canons of classicism is his graduation work “The Appearance of Three Angels to Abraham,” for which he received a gold medal.

In Italy, the artist some time tried to create a large classic painting, but none of this did not work.

In the late 1820s Bryullov threw these fruitless attempts. From them there were only sketches and unfinished canvases – such as “Conversation Numa Pompilia with the nymph Egeria”, 1824 and “Herminia at the Shepherds”.
