Hall of the Aurora by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri Guercino

Hall of the Aurora by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri Guercino

Guercino lived in Rome from 1621 to 1623. During this period he created several remarkable works, including frescoes on the ceilings of the two floors of Villa Ludovisi, commissioned by Cardinal Ludovisi, nephew of the Pope.

The fresco of Aurora adorns the ceiling of the lobby, where the artist’s architectural “deceptions” frame the picture and create the effect of an open sky. Rushing along the morning sky on his magic chariot, Aurora throws flowers and drives away the dark night clouds under the gaze of her elderly wife Tilton.
