Garter Tying Woman by Joshua Reynolds

Garter Tying Woman by Joshua Reynolds

All the artists Reynolds admired were excellent draftsmen. However, in his own work drawing played a secondary role.

The master began to write directly on the canvas, bypassing the preliminary draft stage. Therefore, the Reynolds preparatory drawings have hardly reached us. Sometimes, however, Reynolds created independent drawings – as a rule, academic multi-figure compositions.

On their background stand out a romantic self-portrait of the Italian period and an easy sketch “A Woman Regulating the Garter”. This drawing is made in pencil, but from time to time the artist also resorted to chalk, coal and ink.
