Church in Marissel by Camille Corot

Church in Marissel by Camille Corot

The village of Marissel is located not far from Beauvais, where Corot visited his friend, the painter Badin, whom he met in Italy. Koro drew this picture in the morning hours for nine days in the spring of 1866.

The composition is executed in the style of Dutch landscape painting. Exhibited in the Salon of 1867, the picture aroused the admiration of Queen Victoria and was acquired by an amateur for four thousand francs – a very significant sum for those times.
