1918 in Petrograd by Kuzma Petrov Vodkin

On the balcony of the house depicts a worker with a child in their hands. The social theme is comprehended here through the traditional image of the Madonna. But the artist seeks to give signs of modernity in the picture. This is served by a red scarf on the shoulder of a woman, and a detailed written background – the street of revolutionary Petrograd, the windows of houses with broken glasses, groups of people discussing the first decrees pasted on the walls.

And although the picture remains a lot of conditional and the appearance of a young mother with an icon-painted face is still close to the type of medieval Madonna, in this work there is a lively involvement in modernity, a striving for its philosophical and poetic comprehension.
